VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -
The Vanderburgh Humane Society says they are almost full with cats. This past month, they say they've taken in well over 100 cats and kittens.
Monday is National Hug Your Cat Day and officials at the Humane Society say they've seen more cats and new kittens than usual this spring. They're anxious to find loving homes and owners to give these kitties much needed hugs, kisses, and love.
"We saw numbers in May that we typically don't see until June or July," said Sydney Long with the Vanderburgh Humane Society.
The numbers Long talks about are of purring, playing, eating, sleeping, and climbing cats. The humane society got well over a hundred adoptable ones in May alone. Long says it's a tight squeeze to make room for them all.
"We have them everywhere. We've got one in my particular office, one in there that's hanging out, she's also available for adoption," Long said. "We've also reached out to other organizations to see if they can help us."
Many of the cats are still babies, kittens from extra litters. Others are surrendered because owners are allergic, moving, or simply can't care for them anymore. But volunteers who have gotten to know the animals say they're easy to get attached to here at the shelter.
"They're lovable. I love all kinds of cats. I like old cats. I like kittens," said volunteer Karen Jaeger.
Jaeger spends one day a week taking care of the kitties, and part of her time taking pictures of them to post online for potential owners to look through.
"I think I get more excited when I look on the website and I see that their picture's gone. I know they've been adopted. It's great," Jaeger said.
Long says it's important for potential owners to come by the humane society a few times to get to know the cat they're going to adopt to make sure the right cat goes to the right family.
Jaeger says it's a happy day for everyone at the shelter when one of the dozens of cats finds a new home.
