Homes evacuated after crews hit gas line

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Work crews trying to move a water line accidentally hit a 4 inch gas line around the construction on Boeke on the south side of Evansville.

Four homes around the leak had to be evacuated. Authorities tell is it was dangerous because the amount of gas leaking was "at a potentially explosive level."

Officials were also forced to close off the whole block until it was under control.

Crews were eventually successful in capping the leak.  The fire department remained on still on the scene to help crews clean up.

Residents were allowed back to their homes, although two of those home don't have gas for now.
