A 12 year sentence for first degree homicide

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

A judge sentences an Owensboro man in a nearly year-old murder case.

The grand jury indicted 53-year-old Lauren Martell Wimsatt in December for the death of William V. Roberts during a fight last July.

A judge sentenced Wimsatt to 12 years in prison without the possibility of parole for the death of Roberts.

Prosecutors say Roberts died a couple days after the fight from injuries sustained from Wimsatt.

"In this particular case, this is a Class B felony. Class B felony resulting in death is a violent offense, which requires an 85% service of the plea that was negotiated," said Commonwealth Attorney Bruce Keugel.

Wimsatt will have to serve at least 10 years and two months of the 12 year sentence.
