Crews kill Ft. Branch fire in less than two hours

FT. BRANCH, IN (WFIE) -

Fire crews battled another fire at the former Emge meat packing plant in Ft. Branch Thursday night. It's a building plagued with problems.

Fire destroyed the building in June 2010 and it smoldered for days. Then, in 2011, the EPA spent weeks and nearly half a million dollars cleaning up environmental hazards at the old plant, because the property owners said they couldn't afford to do it.

Neighbors were upset when a recycling center then opened at the site. Now, another fire.

This one broke out around 5:00 p.m. Thursday. Haubstadt and Owensville fire departments were called in to assist. Crews had the fire out in less than two hours.

Nobody was hurt.

Officials say they aren't sure how the fire started. An investigation is ongoing.
