Soap Box Derby kicks off in Owensboro

Posted: Updated:

Thursday kicks off a four day celebration for the grand opening of the new Soap Box Derby track at Ben Hawes Park.

The Owensboro Lions Club will host the events at a new 900-foot long track.

Club members have headed the derby races for the last 12 years but had to work with a portable track that was set up on Bluff Avenue near Chataqua Park. Organizers say this permanent track will make a huge difference.

All racers will check in Thursday, May 31st and a special banquet will be held for them along with a movie showing at the track at 8:30 p.m.

A ribbon cutting will start at 10:30 a.m. on Friday with the USA Olympic Luge team hosting a clinic that afternoon.

Race day officially starts at 8 a.m. Saturday and ends on Sunday with another luge clinic that afternoon.
