Possible consolidation hot topic months before election

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A possible Evansville-Vanderburgh consolidation is a hot topic months before the election.

On Wednesday, supporters of reorganization held a meeting for the public at the Oaklyn Branch Library.

The proposed plan calls for a mayor and a 15 person common council. The referendum will be on the November ballot.

Supporters say a study found the merger would save a million dollars immediately, with six and a half million in the near future. Those in favor also say it will make the government more efficient.

Just last week, those against the merger also met. They say they're worried it would increase taxes and give less representation.

Both sides say voters need to be informed.

"People need to get educated on this issue and not just form very rapid opinions based on sound bites of information, but to come and ask questions on what might be bothering them or concerns that they have," said organizer Ann Ennis.

Those for and against it are launching advertising campaigns. Both groups are planning future meetings, but do not have them set yet.
