EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Police arrested a man who tried to outrun them twice.

Evansville Police say they got a tip about a man who had a handgun illegally at Arbors Apartments at Eastland.

Officers stopped Chevedas McKinney once in his van, but as police approached him, he took off, leading them on a short chase through the apartments.

The McKinney then ditched the van and fled on foot. Officers tracked him with a K-9 unit through a nearby field.

Officers say McKinney is in jail on Tuesday night and facing charges of possession of a handgun illegally and resisting law enforcement on foot and in a vehicle.

McKinney's gun has not been found but a warrant has been issued to search an apartment.

Officers say a large crowd gathered to watch at the scene, and Fredrick Brooks was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Officers think Brooks and McKinney might know each other but were denying it at the scene.
