EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
They made it to the Finish Line at Eastland Mall, but that's where the race ended for three suspects who are now charged with stealing credit cards.
Monday afternoon, around 1:30, officers were called to the Finish Line about three people who apparently tried to use a credit card that didn't belong to them.
"As soon as they steal that credit card, they will go somewhere and try to use it before the victim realizes it and before it's no longer in service," said Lt. Michael Wilder with the Warrick County Sheriff's Office.
Warrick County Sheriff's Office says dozens of credit cards were stolen in the last month from unlocked vehicles. They were able to trace some of those credit cards to the three suspects on Monday when they tried to make purchases at Eastland Mall.
Store security detained the suspects, but they were trying to resist and flee. Another man, who guards also thought was a part of the gang, had already gotten away.
When Evansville Police officers arrived they took John Anthony Cook, Jr., David W. Calloway III, and Kaitlyn P. Altman in custody.
Police say the three were in possession of several stolen credit cards from Warrick County, and they had apparently made purchases at several different stores with the cards.
A Warrick County resident had been monitoring their parent's credit card after it was stolen, and when a purchase came through they notified mall security.
When their vehicle was searched, authorities say they found even more items that had recently been reported stolen in Warrick County, along with $378, and several prescription medicines that were traced and linked with cases out of Warrick County.
A deputy took possession of the credit cards, prescriptions, and other evidence associated with Warrick county cases.
"This is a case that highlights the combined effort from the victims, the retailers and joining law enforcement agencies because we are dealing with Warrick County Sheriff's Office and the Evansville Police Department, so everybody working in conjunction with each other actually lead to these arrests," said Sgt. Jason Cullum with Evansville Police Department.
Both agencies say they've had several thefts from unlocked vehicles in the last month, Warrick County especially from vehicles in subdivisions in Newburgh.
Altman, Cook, and Calloway were arrested and charged with six felony charges of credit card fraud and five felony charges of possession of stolen property each.
