HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

It's going to be a long month or more for drivers travelling to, from, and through Henderson.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be closing the Highway 60 overpass, possibly affecting more than 58,000 drivers.

The drivers most affected will be those who use the Highway 60 overpass. They can expect delays to start there very soon.

Henderson resident Courtney Green can't imagine this being a road less travelled.

"There's plenty of people to come through here," said Green.

He's one of 58,000 motorists who use the cloverleaf every day.

"People go to Walmart, everywhere," Green said.

He says restricting travel on this section of the cloverleaf, the Highway 60 overpass, is like putting up a roadblock from one side of town to the other.

"It's a highway. It goes to at least another highway and that one big highway, so it will probably be one big mess," Green said.

In fact, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet already has a name for that mess: Carmageddon.

"Carmageddon is when you're in your car and you want to go somewhere and you can't," said Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

While Todd admits the name is humorous, he knows the traffic backups won't be.

"It will be inconvenient for those people who travel Highway 60 straight through the cloverleaf," Todd said.

If you're one of those nearly 8,000 drivers, then get ready. Construction crews will soon close down one lane of that overpass for 10 days. They'll switch lanes and then close down the other one for 10 days. That will allow crews to replace the deck on the overpass.

Two detours will be set-up. One will be at Kentucky 351/Zion Road. The other at Marywood Drive.

"We normally don't do state highway detours on a city street, but there's just a limited number of ways to get traffic around there," Todd said.

Henderson Police are hoping the state will look into changing the timing of the stoplights in the area to help with traffic flow.

"They can change the timing to give more of a delay in between. I know that's something we're hoping they check into," said Jennifer Richmond with the Henderson Police Department.

The two main detours will be here at Zion Road and Marywood Drive.

That work is expected to begin any day now. We'll keep you updated.
