ASU grad famous in China for giving fries to elderly woman

Who knew giving some fries and water to a homeless woman would turn you into a celebrity? Arizona State University graduate Jason Loose's picture has been plastered all over Chinese TV and in newspapers for doing just that.

"What I did was something so small and commonplace and easy," Loose told us over the phone. He is turning heads and making headlines in China after he shared some McDonald's fries and water with an elderly woman begging on the street. Someone snapped photos of his good deed and they went viral.

"I really didn't do that much for her at all, just stopped and talked to her was all that I did really," he said. "The food that I gave her wasn't very good."

But he's been nicknamed the American French Fry Brother. So why has this rocketed him to stardom? He thinks it's a cultural issue.

"To see someone who isn't making it is, I think, disturbing to people," he said.

Who could forget that horrible video of a 2-year-old little girl getting run over by two vans in China? Neither van stopped, nor did anybody walking by. Loose said there's a great fear of getting sued if you stop and help because it's happened there before.

He hopes his simple act brings about some change not only in China, but worldwide.

"Think critically about their own response to people who they see around them who need some help," he said.

Loose's time in China is already nearing its end; he will be United States-bound in the next couple of weeks.
