A Massachusetts mother is outraged about what happened to her autistic son at school.
She says a teacher's aide pulled out her boy's tooth. The mom says her son did have a tooth loose, but that's not the one the educator pulled.
Chris Quirk is a 10-year-old autistic fourth grader that now has a big gap in his mouth showing where two teeth are now missing.
"I just felt so angry and so, 'oh, my god. How barbaric. What happened to my kid?'" said Sabrina Grant.
It started last week when Chris went to the Wilson Elementary School with a loose tooth.
An e-mail from his teacher said the loose, wiggly tooth had been a distraction, and so, "We pulled it out today, and had him checked by the nurse immediately after. He is fine."
The superintendent admits that's not in the job description. No way, no how.
"That's certainly not something we have as a protocol, or deal with from the standpoint of training," said Superintendent Steven Heirsche.
Grant is keeping Chris home from school, demanding he be put in a different program. No disciplinary action yet taken.
"We need to be sure what happened, and then we need to deal with it appropriately," said Heirsche.
Chris' mom can only imagine the pain of a good tooth, a molar, taken out.
"Oh, my god. What did they do? Did they hold my kid down? Did he want them to do this? How can somebody who is not even medically trained pull a tooth that wasn't even loose out of his mouth," asks Grant.
According to the Associated Press, Grant told WBZ-TV (http://cbsloc.al/LoIbTZ ) the school's principal has apologized, but she feels that isn't enough. She thinks whoever pulled the tooth should face charges of assault and child abuse. The superintendent of schools says an investigation is under way.
