Mine rescue teams practice skills in safety competition

MADISONVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

On Wednesday, more than 20 mine rescue teams from four states competed in this year's Safety Days Competition at the Ballard Convention Center in Madisonville. The two day event included simulated mine disasters, a pre-shift examiner and first aid competition. Organizers say this contest is a refresher to all miners on how important safety is in their profession.

"Team safety is a big issue. We don't want any teams to put themselves in any danger because if they get hurt, then who's going to get the people that are missing? So, it's good practice. It's good practice for all of them," said Kenny Mitchell with the Office of Mine Safety.

Teams are also preparing for the Kentucky Mine Institute State Competition in September.
