Busy Hancock Co. street won't see sidewalks for awhile

HANCOCK CO., KY (WFIE) -

Some residents in Lewisport are petitioning the city to install sidewalks along a busy street, but the path to that project may be two years away.

"There is quite a bit of traffic on this road," said resident Heather Emmick.

From the railroad tracks to about a mile south on Fourth Street in Lewisport.

"As a driver, I'd feel better if there were a sidewalk," said Emmick.

Residents living around this road say there are too many pedestrians and not enough pavement.

"With school out, the kids will ride their bike in this area more. It would be safer for them," said Emmick.

Emmick uses Fourth Street often to get to the salon. She says adding a sidewalk will help keep everyone safe.

"This is not going to happen overnight," said Lewisport Mayor Chad Gregory.

Mayor Gregory says he supports the sidewalk project but can't move much faster, even with a petition.

"We're going to have to put drainage tile in these ditches, and you're going to be looking at close to $8,000 to $10,000 just to cover those ditches," said Gregory.

Mayor Gregory says the sidewalk would cost at least $50,000 and could take at least one to two years to get the sidewalk put in.

Residents also hope a new sidewalk will encourage better habits while staying safe.

"It might encourage people to get out and walk more. Maybe ride their bikes," said Emmick.

Mayor Gregory says the city will continue to discuss the best options for starting this project.
