New Harmony School sees its last school day

NEW HARMONY, IN (WFIE) -

It was the last day of school for students in New Harmony, and behind them, the doors closed for good. Starting next school year, students will attend schools in the North Posey district.

It was a sad day for many students and staff on Tuesday as they heard the last dismissal bell ring and took the last bus ride home after over a hundred and thirty years.

Tuesday, students enjoyed bouncy castles, lunch outside, and each student left a Rappite blue handprint and signature on a banner, which is to be displayed in New Harmony.

Superintendent Fran Thoele tells 14 News that some staff members retired, some will work at North Posey, and some have found teaching jobs in other districts. She says the students have already visited North Posey schools and have their class schedules. This is some advance planning to make the transition a little easier.

"We've had plenty of activities for them. I think they're just totally enjoying the day, but it will hit them, too, later. It's a historic day here. It's been a wonderful place to educate children and it's got a wonderful history. And we're celebrating all the people that made it possible," said Thoele.

As for the school real estate itself, the New Harmony School Board President says the school sold that real estate to New Harmony and the city will lease it to North Posey schools.
