Students get first look at new Gibson Co. school

GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Gibson School Corporation will be opening a brand new school building for students in the fall.

The official open house for the new high school doesn't take place until summer, but on Tuesday morning students got a first look at where they'll be attending classes next year.

"You walk in here and you get goosebumps," said  student Raelynn Thompson.

"I came in here completely open minded and I did not expect to see this huge gym," said student Brock Kolb.

The gymnasium was the first stop for freshmen and sophomores as they entered the new Princeton Community High School for the first time and took note of the new amenities like the bleachers, basketball hoops and scoreboard. But Principal Jon Abbey says the gym is just the start.

"There's a lot of sizzles in here," said Abbey.

Other new features, like hundreds of computers, an enlarged cafeteria area with healthy lunch selections, and specialized classrooms, like auto shop, were also pointed out on the tour.

Principal Abbey also answered questions about the layout of the school so students won't get lost their first day back.

Along with the new building, a new tradition also starts this week. High school graduation will now take place at the new high school. Abbey says even though they haven't held classes in the building yet, they are anxious to start holding events there. Plus, they wanted to honor their seniors.

"The school board really wanted to show this building off to the community, and unfortunately those kids didn't get a shot at the place, so they can at least sit on the floor and graduate here," said Abbey.

But for the students who visited, all of them underclassmen, they're looking forward to next fall, before even starting their summer break.

"It makes you excited for the next year of school. It makes you want to come back to school," said Thompson.

The principal tells 14 News that they will be having an official open house for the community on July 28.
