GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Gibson County Health Department is sending a warning to property owners on Tuesday that they are cracking down on unkempt homes that pose a threat to public health.

Officials at the health department tell 14 News they were charged by the board of health to take a look at homes around the county that were unsafe, and say many of them had been the site of meth labs.

Administrator for the health department Jennifer Schatz says they are currently looking at around a dozen houses.

Many are vacant, four of them are meth-related.

Schatz says a home can be declared unhabitable when it is a fire hazard or if it poses any kind of health threat to people who live around it or live in it and she says that can come in all different forms.

"They harbor any kind of insects, rodents, a lot of things. A lot of times the windows are broken, doors are kicked in, and that then can lead to people wanting to go in there, little kids want to explore," said Schatz.

If you a feel a house near you is unsafe, you are asked to call the health department, and they will come and inspect it.
