Indiana Catholic diocese part of lawsuit over birth control

Posted: Updated:
INDIANA (WFIE) -

Catholic dioceses, schools and groups in eight states including Indiana sue the Obama administration over birth control.

The Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which stems from a Health and Human Services rule requiring employers to provide contraception coverage.

President Obama softened the mandate in February, saying then that religious groups will not have to pay for the contraceptive services or provide the services directly, their insurers will.

But Catholic leaders say that doesn't go far enough to protect their religious freedom.

An advisory panel from the Institute of Medicine recommended requiring birth control coverage in part because it promotes women's health by allowing them to space their pregnancies.
