Cannelton hoping clean up will improve community pride

CANNELTON, IN (WFIE) -

The town of Cannelton is doing what it can to clean-up and promote community pride, in anticipation of it's 175th anniversary celebration.

Residents tell 14 News trash clean up has been slow for years now, and city officials say they're ready to do something about it.

"I love this town, and I'd like to see it get back to its days of glory again," said resident Jane Snyder.

Snyder has lived in Cannelton for her entire life. She says over the years, hometown pride has diminished, and she wishes more people would strive to keep the town looking clean.

"We have a very transient population here. People move in, people move out. They move into rental houses. They don't care, people that own the houses don't really care, because they don't live in town," she said.

For some time now, a city ordinance has been in place to deter people from leaving trash, and trash containers, on the street, but not everyone is following the rules.

Cannelton Mayor Mary Snyder says that is about to change.

"It's just a matter of trying to keep it enforced. We're just going to try to take it upon ourself to visit with people, and hopefully they will take a little more pride in their property," Mayor Snyder told 14 News.

Mayor Snyder says people could face fines of up to $500 a day, if trash is kept out on the street for too long, but she hopes people will want to clean-up, to show pride in their community.

"We hope it doesn't come to that. You know, we hope people get involved and say, 'Hey, you know, I want to help."

Mayor Snyder says that the 175th anniversary for the town will be in October.
