HENDERSON CO, KY (WFIE) -

In Henderson, the Humane Society is looking for your help identifying a man, they say, abandoned a dog at their shelter Thursday night after business hours.

Friday, that dog is getting medical treatment while animal officials review surveillance video.

The Humane Society is posting pictures of the abandoned beagle on their Facebook page.

Along with pictures captured by surveillance cameras, anything they say, to help gather clues on just who left this dog behind.

"I think fate really intervened," said volunteer Stacey McCord-Crooks.

McCord-Crooks says Thursday night, she was just in the right place at the right time.

She says she was headed to the Humane Society to finish up a project when she came across a female beagle, wandering toward busy Green Street.

"At the last minute, I had to swerve because I did not see it until it was right up on me," she said.

"It was all skin and bones. It wasn't well taken care of," said shelter Operations Director Josh Cromer.

Cromer tells us he then checked surveillance video.

In that video, around 8:30 p.m., a man getting out of a white van taking a dog out of the van, and leaving it outside before driving off.

"Green street is right up the road. It could've been hit by a car. That's why we ask if you're going to surrender an animal, you do it during business hours," Cromer told 14 News.

The Humane Society even has signs posted outside, saying it's illegal to leave an animal after the shelter closes.

Friday, the beagle took a trip to a local vet, who tells us she has heartworms and hookworms, and while Cromer tells us the next steps are nursing the dog back to health and finding her a good home, identifying the man who left her is a top priority.

"We're going to continue to examine the tape, get a license plate number off of the van and find out exactly who did this," he said.
