Evansville Police getting a Lexus

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Police will be getting some more help next school year at Evansville schools.

EPD is getting a new full-time K-9 unit. Complete with a dog and a police K-9 vehicle.

The dog, Lexus, is a 1 ½-year-old Yellow Labrador. She is in her second week of eight weeks training and will be ready for the next school year.

The vehicle is a 2012 Toyota Highlander built at the Princeton Toyota plant.

The new unit is a community effort with multiple contributors.

Kenny Kent gave the vehicle and Rent and Roll provided the wheels and rims. The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office provided Lexus.  Pet Food Center gave a dog house and PetsMart a car kennel.

The new vehicle's design was by a Graduating Mater Dei Senior, Noah Lutz. He won a contest put on by EPD for all High School art departments.

The new unit will allow EPD to do school visits much more often than before. Previously only about once or twice a year.

If a school needs the Resource Officer to check something out the new unit can go immediately instead of pulling in another EPD K-9.
