New federal text alert system launched

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

14 News has provided severe weather alerts for your mobile phone for years.  Now, the federal government is starting a similar service.

Beginning this month, wireless carriers and the federal government are launching a system to automatically warn you of dangerous weather and other emergencies in the form of a text to your cell phone.  The alerts are free and you won't have to sign up to get them.  Warnings will be location-based, so if you're traveling, you'll receive an alert for whatever emergency is happening in the area you're in.

Of course, you can also get local weather alerts through email or text through our 14 weather alert system just click on the weather tab on 14news.com to sign up.   We also have a 14 first alert weather app where you can track storms right from your phone.
