EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Work on the Back 40 parking lot behind Evansville's Civic Center is about two weeks behind schedule.
The reason has nothing to do with the weather. Instead, the reason has to do with retention chambers being put in the parking lot.
The retention chambers were meant to hold stormwater until it seeps into the ground, and keeping it out of the combined sewers.
The building authority says that was all done in compliance with a federal decree through the city's water department.
The problem is that these chambers collapsed and caved in on themselves, and that's resulting in about a two week delay.
"We've talked to the manufacturer, they were down last week. We're going to excavate and take all that back out, and we're actually replacing those with a different chamber that we expect to perform better," said David Rector, the General Manager of the Evansville Vanderburgh County Building Authority.
Initially, the plan was to close the front half of the lot then the back half, but that's since changed. Now instead of front and back, they're working side to side.
The building authority says that's to make things more convenient for people.
Originally, this project was projected to last until the middle of June. It now looks like it may be July before things are back to normal.
