Daviess Co. officials make plan to prevent flooding

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -

There's a new way county officials are handling debris clean-up and flooding in the area. A comprehensive plan is now in place to help stop problems before they start.

"We'll get calls from a little drainage swell in someone's backyard," said County Engineer Mark Brasher.

When it comes to flooding in Daviess County, Brasher said, "We'll get several calls a year about Panther Creek."

Some creeks and ditches may need more work than others. It's a love hate relationship according to county crews.

"Without this creek, we're in trouble," said resident Chris Conkright.

Panther Creek stretches for miles and holds the most water. When it gets backed up, residents like Conkright, know the damage it can cause.

"The water was up over the road for a little while and the creek was definitely over its banks," said Conkright.

That's what happened last spring when Panther overflowed.

Now, county engineers want to prevent as much flooding as possible by constantly monitoring all the creeks.

"We're trying to find these obstructions before a rain event and try to clean it out before it goes on the roadways," said Brasher.

Brasher says the drainage committee has also put together a comprehensive plan so the public and fiscal court have a clear understanding of clean-up procedures when a creek spills-over.

"It comes up faster and takes longer to get out," said Conkright.

Conkright says learning more about the creek has helped him understand the county's new plan in helping prevent flooding.

"Taking care of it and maintaining it and the proactive approach is the way to go," said Conkright.

Fiscal court will look over the latest flooding plan May 30.
