EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The Commission on Homelessness met Monday, for the first of four meetings to discuss how to update the future of Destination Home, the county's ten year plan to end homelessness.

The commission is meeting with organizations, local and national experts, and state consulting groups to discuss the future of the plan.

Heather Lyons of the Corporation for Supportive Housing, a consulting and training group says a lot has changed since 2004 when the commission put together the first plan.

"The economy has changed, political leadership has changed at the local, state and federal level," says Lyons.

The downturn in the economy, and the subsequent increased need of people asking for help and limited resources are going to be a big talking point at the meetings.

Also on the agenda: increased access to permanent housing, prevention of homelessness, access to healthcare, addressing homeless youth, re-entry of people released from jails or prisons, and how to better measure performance.

The entire community is encouraged to voice their opinions. The meetings will take place at the Ridgeway University Center on the University of Evansville campus.

Meetings start at 9:30 a.m. and go until about 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. The commission will put together a list of recommendations Wednesday and present them to the public from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

A public presentation of the final recommendations will be at 11 a.m. on Monday.
