Athletes compete in Special Olympics

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

On Saturday, athletes from several Indiana counties competed in the Special Olympics at Enlow Field.

The event started with Evansville Police and Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office running with the 'Flame of Hope', which is a long-time tradition. Athletes participated in competitions like track and field and bocce.

Directors say the support from the community is what helps make the games such a success.

"It means everything to us. Our athletes knowing that they have the police and the firemen and the Civitans and all these other volunteers behind them means everything," said Nancy Shelton, the Area Director for the Special Olympics.

Directors say this event has been in Evansville around 40 years.
