Green flag for more speed at Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -

IndyCar Series officials are announcing a change that will increase the horsepower of engines by 40 to 50 in time for Indianapolis 500 qualifying.

The change will be made for next Friday's practice and both days of next weekend's qualifying. Drivers believe the move will increase speeds by 4 to 5 mph in qualifying.

Speed has been a big concern so far this season.

Practice is scheduled to open Saturday without the extra boost. Indy is the first oval race this season, and even veterans are anxious to see how the new cars will handle on the Brickyard's 2.5-mile track.
