The helis invade this weekend

VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

You might see some mini-helicopters flying over Vanderburgh County this weekend.

It's the 3rd annual Heli Invasion.  It's underway right now and is hosted by the Evansville Radio Control model aircraft club.

Whether you're at the controls, working on aircraft, or just watching, at the 3rd annual Heli Invasion, there's something for just about everyone.

"The integration of the electronics and the mechanical. Its more of a technical challenge for me. I'm not so much of a pilot. I enjoy the building more than the flying a lot of the time," said event organizer Bill White.

The radio control model aircrafts perform anything from precision flying to extreme aerobatics.

That sounds pretty serious, but the entire weekend is dedicated to fun.  No judges, no competition, but even so, pilots from all over the country have traveled here to show off their skills.

"A lot of them are award winning pilots and sponsored pilots by the big helicopter companies," White told 14 News.

For those of you who've never gotten your hands on the controls, there's a simulated helicopter you can practice on.

"We have the simulator set up and they can get some hands on training and try it out for themselves," White said.

You can participate at any age. In fact, organizers say the younger the better.

"We have a young pilot out here that's six-years-old and he'll be flying out here, too. He'll be flying this weekend. He's the youngest sponsored pilot in the United States," White noted.

The event is free, but while you're here, you can enjoy concessions from a local high school booster club and enter in some raffle drawings.

Proceeds benefit operation support on the home front.

Helicopters will be flying all day and night until about noon on Sunday.
