DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -
Work on the Rudy Mine Trails at Ben Hawes Park in Owensboro started over a year ago.
The city put up $25,000 to fix the outgrown biking and hiking system.
It's now finally open to the public today.
Parks and Rec have worked closely with the Kentucky Mountain Biking Association and trail designers since 2010.
Adam Johnson with the Kentucky Mountain Biking Association said, "we're excited for so long we've had to travel out of town and even out of state to have somewhere to ride."
Johnson worked on the trails and says he can now enjoy his hobby daily.
Even bikers from out of town have waited to hit these courses.
Now the entire community, Johnson says, will benefit from this recreation, "It brings people into our community it helps our economy it brings in people who are going to stop and eat and have bicycles worked on and pick up bicycles."
Parks and Rec director, Amanda Rogers, says the trails took a hard hit during the ice storm in 2009.
"A lot of the trail system was not picked up so once we took ownership of that property in June 2010 we started the cleanup process," said Rogers.
But finishing took a while since they added a brand new single track to the course.
Rogers said, "It's a great place to get out and do some aerobic fitness so it's just another great opportunity the City of Owensboro provides its citizens."
Now with over 11 miles to explore...
"They're all ready to hit the dirt," said Adam Johnson.
