Some Allied Waste employees hit the picket lines

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Allied Waste employees hit the picket lines on Wednesday, hours after being locked out of their jobs.

The lockout, which affects 79 Teamsters Local 215 workers, started Tuesday night. Allied Waste's General Manager Mark McKune says the company made the decision to lockout workers after the union failed to accept its best and final contract offer. This is after their most recent contract expired on April 26.

The sticking point between the two sides continues to be the retirement plan offered. The Teamsters are fighting for employees to be able to keep their pension plans. Allied wants to switch those plans to a 401K.

While workers are locked out, Allied says out of town company employees will take over trash routes.

"Those employees are currently servicing the accounts. Our routes are running with minimal delay this morning and we don't forsee any problems with servicing our customers," said McKune.

No meetings are scheduled between Allied Waste Services and the Teamsters.
