Drivers still disobey traffic signs at Lincoln and Green River

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

After weeks of warnings, Evansville Police say drivers continue to disobey the no turn signs at Lincoln and Green River Road.

Some have found out the hard way that a wrong turn at the road construction site can lead to an expensive ticket.

Traffic really seems to pick up when driving on Lincoln heading east. Although signs are posted saying No Left Turn from Lincoln onto Green River, many drivers are disobeying traffic signals causing a mess, and a bit of road rage too.

"It's a little frustrating. It's like obey the rules please," said a driver in the area.

"All day long I'm hearing cars honking at other vehicles because cars are making others wait so they can turn, and they are not supposed to be turning," said Jennifer Chaffin, who works near the intersection.

It's a familiar sight for many who drive through the busy intersection.  Getting stuck behind a vehicle determined to turn left up until the light runs out.

"We have a lot of people that call ahead and want to know, 'what's the best way to get here,' and it's really kind of hard to describe a best way. There is no best way," said Chaffin.

EPD says they periodically patrol the intersection and say they have given out at least 100 tickets for disobeying signals, and the ticket comes with a $116 fine.

"I just feel like it's so hard to get around town. I've almost had like three wrecks right at this intersection because it's really hard to turn left, because this car is trying to turn and just causes a lot of problems," said driver Ashley Hammelman.

Officers will continue to monitor the intersection until the project is complete in the fall.

"I think it's kind of crazy. It's hard to get through, but I understand progress has to be made," said a driver.
