The Structural Empowerment Nursing Excellence Award recognizes the professional nurse who promotes and develops strong partnerships with the community to improve patient outcomes and advance the health of the community served. In addition, this nurse supports organizational goals, advances the nursing profession and supports a lifelong learning culture that includes professional collaboration and role development.
The recipient of the 2016 Structural Empowerment Nursing Excellence Award is Jana Whitehead. According to her nominators, “Jana is the definition of nursing excellence. Her staff love working with her and she holds them to the highest standards. She leads by example in everything she does and encourages all nurses to be the best they can be. St. Mary’s and the Emergency Department are lucky to have a nurse as talented and dedicated as Jana!”
Jana graduated from Vincennes University with an Associate of Science in Nursing in 1986. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Indiana and her Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University in 2013. Jana began her career at Welborn Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit. She transitioned to LifeFlight and worked at a local hospital for seven years before beginning her career at St. Mary’s in the Emergency Department. After working in the Emergency Department for a short time, Jana was promoted to the Director of St. Mary’s LifeFlight for four years before transitioning to Clinical Supervisor in the Emergency Department. Jana has dedicated herself to emergency nursing and providing the highest quality of care for these patients. Her Master of Science in Nursing degree specializes in Informatics, and she has been a vital asset with the implementation of the electronic medical record. Jana currently is a member of the Clinical Informatics Shared Governance Council and is an active participant in “Go Live” opportunities throughout Indiana hospitals within the Ascension Health Organization. Jana currently is the secretary of the local Emergency Nurses Association chapter.
Jana promotes teamwork and education for the Emergency staff community. She is an instructor for Emergency Medical Service classes and the Trauma Nursing Core Course. She received her certification as an Emergency Certified Nurse. In the fall of 2015, she was an Adjunct Clinical Instructor for ten University of Southern Indiana nursing students on the night shift within Critical Care areas and plans to continue this in the future years. According to her nominators, “During her night shift clinical with critical patients, Jana showed her students how to be an effective member of the team. Also, she allowed the students an opportunity to see how powerful and wonderful the nursing profession can be.”
