HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

In Henderson's Central Park on Tuesday, volunteers put up over 4,000 flags and crosses to honor local fallen veterans.

The American Legion is receiving help from North Middle School eighth graders.

Each symbol has a veteran's name. The legion says it's an annual Memorial Day project and a great way to show community support.

"The family members just come here, you know, they're proud. I mean, all the stories that can be told out of these veterans, well, you can't describe it sometimes," said Jim Hanley with the American Legion.

The American Legion says those flags will be displayed until the Friday after Memorial Day.
