DARMSTADT, IN (WFIE) -
Calling it unfair, officials in the Town of Darmstadt say their sewer rates are higher than anywhere else in Vanderburgh County.
Town officials say it's because they own and maintain their own sewer system and then they send the gray water back to Evansville.
But they say they're still paying the standard outside city rate as if Evansville Sewer and Water were fully servicing the town, which is 35% higher than anywhere else.
The Pinkstons have three horses grazing in the paddock near their home, who they met at a rescue shelter. They say they love having them.
"Horses are a big expense, but what you get out of them makes them worth it," said Kathy Pinkston.
She says purchasing hay and other supplies for the horses is a large cost, so they're sticking to their budget. But she says the possibility of an increase in her sewer bill gives her a little concern.
"I always think any rate increase is a problem, particularly for anyone who is on a limited income," said Pinkston.
Town council member Steve Kahre says Evansville Sewer bills them every month with the standard outside city fee even though they process the water through their own system. Kahre says their rates should be lower because of that.
"The bottom line is we need the reduction because we're not receiving the services," said Kahre.
14 News spoke with Evansville Water and Sewer officials who say all customers have experienced rate increases because of a number of capital projects.
Kahre says rates have risen three times and, so far, the town has been able to absorb that, but they fear they may have to start raising residents' rates.
"The Town of Darmstadt is stretched to it's limit on the sewer system. It's going to get to the point where we just don't have the money to absorb it,"said Kahre.
Kahre says they are looking to petition Evansville Water and Sewer to discuss this.
Kahre says one suggestion they might be looking at in the future is their own water filtration system.
