EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
The deadline has passed for tenants at Kunkel Square to be out of their apartments after the State Fire Marshal's Office posted the notice on Monday.
Tuesday at Kunkel Square, residents were coming and going with suitcases and laundry baskets, trying to gather the belongings they'll need at their temporary location before that deadline.
At the order of the State Fire Marshal, tenants had to be out of Kunkel Square by 6:00 p.m. According to the building commission, the fire alarm system, sprinklers, and stairways need upgrades to meet fire codes. On Tuesday, The Kunkel Group did not return our calls, but last night, they said crews are already making those upgrades and should be done in a matter of days.
Residents 14 News talked with call the closing frustrating but say they'll be excited to move back in.
"Hopefully we can get back in within a week. We really hope that they work to resolve it. I know that they're working to get it fixed, and as long as we don't have to be out too long, that'll be, that'll be great," said Cristen Thompson, who is a tenant at Kunkel Square Apartments.
The Kunkel Group is putting around 13 tenants up in hotels while those upgrades are made.
Some residents like Thompson say the apartments have a beautiful view of the river, and love living there. They just hope to move back in soon.
