VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -
It's Indiana Primary day, and for the first time, all of Vanderburgh County voters had the option of voting at any of the new voting centers.
Fifteen centers debuted in the city in the fall. Eight more were added in the county in March.
The polls opened just after daybreak at 6:00 a.m.
At one of the larger voting centers, the Vanderburgh County 4-H Grounds, some eager voters came early, showing promise for a positive turnout.
"We had people here at 5:30 a.m. waiting," said Tim Bryan who was a 4-H Grounds poll inspector.
When asked is he expected that, Tim said, "Not at all. It made us a little nervous, knowing we had people tapping their toes, waiting."
As the day progressed, some poll workers said the turnout was not as busy as the general election.
Some say that could have to do with the extra voting centers or the fact that it's the primary election.
"It's a guessing game no matter how you look at it," said Mike Decker, the Washington Square Mall poll inspector.
Officials say they learned a lot during city elections, but Tuesday's primary will serve as a test.
Poll site workers encourage citizens to exercise their right.
"I believe in the system we have in the United States, so even though this is just the primary, it's important in it's own way," said Decker.
Officials say having over 20 voting centers makes it convenient for citizens. That way, no matter what side of town you're on, chances are, there's a polling place near you.
Polls are open until 6:00 p.m. You'll need a photo ID to vote. For the locations of the voting centers, click here.
