The Simple Path project making impact, even during construction

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

A project called The Simple Path is still under construction in Owensboro.

Volunteers are renovating a building to be used for a women's shelter. Even though there are six more weeks of work left, the project is already making an impact.

Many drive by the Colonel House in Owensboro without a thought or concern about the ones who call it place home.

"I've got osteomyelitis, I'm in a wheel chair," said Misty Morrison. "I can't afford the rent and the deposit."

It's what manager, Maggie Weber sees daily.

"There's a lot of people. There's a waiting list here because they don't have anywhere else to go," said Weber.

"We'll have beds here, and we're going to have a small lounge area here," said Kim Jagoe, who is Executive Director of Simple Path.

That's why Jagoe and a group of volunteers are gutting the building and turning it into a women's shelter. So women like Shults can try to save up for a place of their own.

"I'm on my final extension for my unemployment and I've got to do something," said Lesa Shults.

Jagoe says it's nothing new. These women inching their way onto a growing waiting list for public housing, and in the meantime, no stability.

"We're hoping not only can we give them temporary housing here, but also during the day, skills in the kitchen," said Jagoe.

Jagoe expects the shelter to hold at least 25 for now. It will become a resource center after a bigger place is finished.

"Sometimes there's nothing you can do. You just live," said Shults.

Although these women struggle, they're still thankful for what the organization has already done for them.

"They got me caught up and I thank God for them," said Morrison.
