EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

An Evansville woman is in fair condition Tuesday night after police say she was beaten by her boyfriend and his sister.

43-year-old Tyrus Armstead and 52-year-old Andrea Winters are charged with battery in the case. Police say the victim, 57-year-old Angela Howard, was found outside in the grass with a blood trail leading to Armstead's apartment.

The suspects told police it all started with a verbal fight between themselves and the victim. Police say the injuries to the victim are extensive.

According to police, witnesses found the woman lying in a grassy area near the apartment of her boyfriend, Armstead. In the initial 911 call, witnesses even believed the victim could be deceased.

"The lady looks like she's dead or something, she's bleeding real bad," said the caller on the 911 tape.

The report states the woman was badly beaten, with head and face trauma and possible liver damage. Sgt. Jason Cullum says a beating this extensive is rare.

"A lot of times the battery charge is based on a complaint of pain as opposed to visual injury or severe injury like this," said Cullum.

Armstead and Winters were arrested. According to the report, Winters later admitted to police that the three of them had been arguing. She told officers they had hit her several times and caused her to hit her head on the kitchen counter.

Cullum says officers do patrol the Woodland Place Apartments because it's a large complex, and they have been called out there before.

"We've had homicides down there, we've had high profile child abuse cases that have occurred over there, overall the apartment complex does a good job trying to police itself. Unfortunately with the sheer number of people that come and go from there, these things can happen," said Cullum.

Cullum says this was a personal incident, and they were relieved other residents were not endangered.

Both Armstead and Winters have been charged with aggravated battery.
