An investigation is underway after a body was discovered at Churchill Downs just before 5:00 a.m. Sunday.
The man has been identified as 48-year-old Adan Fabian Perez from Guatemala.
Louisville Metro Police Department Spokesperson Alicia Smiley said Churchill Downs security found Perez inside Barn #8 and called police.
"The barns themselves have various stalls for the horses. He was actually found in the barn and not in a stall with a horse or anything," Smiley told WAVE 3 News, our sister station in Louisville.
Police are not saying how the man died. Smiley would only say that "he was deceased at the scene."
Smiley did confirm that the death is being treated as a homicide investigation.
"[Detectives] were able to determine that there is foul play involved, however we still do not have an exact cause of death and we'll have to await the coroner's report for those details," Smiley said.
The investigation is also complicated by the fact that the man didn't have any identification on him.
"At this point we have very little information on the victim himself. We do know he is a Hispanic male. We do not have an age nor are we aware of whether or not he is a local resident. Our investigation is ongoing to determine specifically why he would have been at this location and what may have led to his death," Smiley said.
Police interviewed people who live above the barns to try to piece together who the man was and why he was there.
While it puts a cloud over the end to the record-breaking 138th Kentucky Derby, LMPD says the death isn't related to the Derby.
"We don't have anything pointing to the fact that this would have had any association in terms of Churchill Downs or the Derby itself," Smiley said.
Police have no suspects at this time. The body was wheeled away just after 9:00 a.m. Sunday for an autopsy that is expected to be performed Monday.
