Wilhite family and friends rally as decision draws near

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

According to Charles Wilhite's family, their loved one will find out this coming Monday if the murder charge he was convicted on will be overturned, or if he will possibly get a new trial based on changes in evidence and testimony.

Family and friends of Wilhite rallied in the Six Corners neighborhood on Saturday, showing their support for him.

Wilhite was convicted of shooting and killing Springfield resident Alberto Rodriguez in 2008.

Since then, the prosecution's star witness recanted his story, saying Wilhite was not the shooter.

Wilhite's family said it is an anxious time knowing they should have an answer just a couple of days from now.

"We have faith that Judge Velis will use his discretion and his privilege of knowledge to come up with a correct decision," said Wilhite's aunt, Vira Cage. "We're very hopeful about that. We're anticipating that. We'll be praying for that."

Wilhite's family said Judge Peter Velis, who is presiding over the case, said he would have a decision by Monday.
