Three firefighters help deliver baby

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Lt. Spike Ostiguy is still beaming more than 24 hours after he brought a new life into the world.

"It was a feel-good story when we got back to the station and the adrenaline subsides," said Ostiguy.

The long-time firefighter, along with firefighters John Scalia and Jason Santaniello from Engine 6, responded to the Westfield Road home Thursday afternoon after the mom-to-be decided she couldn't make it to the hospital.

"It was only nine minutes from the time we received the call to the time of the recorded birth of Baby Henry," said Ostiguy.

According to first responders, the first-time mother was calm when they arrived during an ordeal that may have been too much for others.

"There was not a lot of anxiety, I think she inspired us just by being so relaxed with the whole situation," said Ostiguy.

With Ostiguy, his two fellow firefighters and the family there to welcome him, little Baby Henry was born into the world at only about four or five pounds - a month premature, but healthy.

"We thought about what actually just happened, bringing a precious life into the world," said Ostiguy.

And he's not the first baby that Ostiguy has ushered into the world to meet his family, and he's betting it won't be his last.

"This is my fourth in the field," said Ostiguy, "something like this never gets old."

The mother and her baby were taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital and are both expected to be OK.
