UNION CO, KY (WFIE) -

Miners from all across western Kentucky took part in a mine rescue competition Friday morning.

It was held at the Union County Fairgrounds and miners from seven different companies participated.

The competition simulates being underground, and miners are evaluated on their efficiency and their ability to properly work through potential hazards.

Organizers say safety is their number one priority, and these competitions help sharpen everyone's skills.

"We have a lot of people that have been doing this for 20 plus years and we have a lot of newcomers, so it's good exercise. They work together, they mesh together, and it's teamwork, a lot of teamwork, you have to trust each other," said Kenny Mitchell with the Office of Mining Safety.

The next competition, the Western Kentucky Mine Institute, will be held at the Hopkins County Fairgrounds on May 23rd and 24th.
