LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Due to the severe weather that was moving into the area, Churchill Downs officials asked the infield crowd to seek shelter indoors a little more than an hour before the 138th Kentucky Oaks race was scheduled to run.

The National Weather Service had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Jefferson County that lasted until 5:30 p.m. EDT. The storms packed powerful winds and torrential rain caused a weather delay at the track.

Churchill Downs officials said more than 100,000 people had gathered at the track for the annual fillies race.

The Kentucky Derby Festival also postponed all events at the Louisville Waterfront until the storm passed.
