20+ accidents reported near Green River/Lincoln construction since project began

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A traffic alert on Evansville's east side. Some north and southbound lanes on Green River are back open, but there are still turning restrictions on Lincoln.

There is plenty of traffic, one lane of traffic in all directions is open, but there are turn lane restrictions and as we've been watching, many drivers are ignoring the temporary traffic signs.

North and southbound lanes on Green River are open, but if you are driving on Lincoln Avenue, you cannot make a left turn.

EPD tells 14 News many drivers are also cutting through parking lots.  Since the project began last Fall, there have been nine wrecks in the CVS parking lot and 20 at the intersection.

Drivers say they see other motorists holding up traffic, as they ignore the 'no left turn' signs.

"I was going to one of my friends' house and I was going to turn left, and all the cars were turning left and then I saw the sign. I was like 'I can't turn left, I don't know what to do.' So I just kept going straight, and then everyone behind me still went left. So, some people are trying to do it and others are just like I'm going to turn left," said motorist Erin Wolford.

An Evansville City Engineer tells 14 News the project is progressing and may even be ahead of schedule.

Crews do have until November to finish the upgrades on the intersection.

The upgrades will include new stop lights and the addition of some turning lanes.
