LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The sights and sounds of Churchill Downs will be front and center for the world to see Friday for the 138th running of the Kentucky Oaks.
"We had 110,000 people a year ago, two years ago we had a record 116,000," said Darren Rogers, spokesperson for Churchill Downs.
It takes a crew of thousands to transform the iconic race track for the huge crowd. "We're going to have 11,000 people, many of them working overnight to get the product in place," Rogers said.
The main product for Friday centers around one color.
"After Thursday's last race you're going to see a pinkification of Churchill Downs," Rogers said. That includes putting thousands of the pink lilies in place along with other pink decorations.
A special parade will kick things off. The Survivors Parade will again take place on Kentucky Oaks Day to show support for cancer survivors.
The parade will be made up of 138 cancer survivors who have been chosen through an online nomination and selection process.
