LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – It's the iconic sight after the winner crosses the finish line at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Oaks, and the painstaking task of crafting the floral masterpiece is done.

Dozens of lilies make up the garland that's draped over the winning horse, and for nearly 20 years, Kroger florists have overseen that task.

"It's about 20 pounds and 126 inches long and about 20 inches wide," said Kroger Floral ManagerTrina Gilpin.

More than 160 Star Fighter Lilies make up the garland.

The work started Monday, but the painstaking task of installing the flowers is saved for the night before the big race. It's a process that takes nearly five hours to complete. A police officer even stands by to make sure nothing goes wrong.

"They have water picks inserted on the inside so each lily is inserted into water, then it gets tied down with a piece of yarn so it doesn't slip out," Gilpin said.

When the work is complete, the spread is refrigerated. It is followed by a police escort Friday morning to the track.
