National swim survival program for children available in Tri-State

TRI-STATE (WFIE) -

There's a national swim survival program for children catching on here in the Tri-State and it's not your typical swim class.

Sarah Hooper is the instructor for the Infant Swim Resource self-rescue program at Bob's Gym in Newburgh.

It's designed to teach children from six months to six years survival rescue skills if they happen  to fall into the water.

Hooper says, by the end of the course, participants will know just what to do, carrying out their mission that 'not one more child drowns.'

"Six to 12 months, they'll be able to happen into water and float. The one-year old to six-year olds, they're going to be able to happen into any type of water and be able to swim to the edge and get out," Hooper told 14 News.

Coming up Friday on 14 news at 4, Beth Sweeney introduces us to four-year old Ava who just passed the course, and why her mom says she's confident heading into summer swim season.

Meantime, if you're interested in registering your child for the course, contact Sarah Hooper at s.hooper@infantswim.com
