Perry Co. residents speak out on State Road 66 concerns

CANNELTON, IN (WFIE) -

A construction project on State Road 66 has some Perry County homeowners upset over damage to their property.

In Cannelton, homeowners tell 14 News that construction on State Road 66 has been underway since October.

They also tell me that they aren't too pleased with the way the project has been handled.

"Slow and inconsistent," were the words used by Cannelton resident David Covetts in regards to how the project has been going thus far.

Covetts lives on State Road 66 in Cannelton.

For the past eight months, he says construction on sidewalks here has been a burden on him and his neighbors.

"I could not get out of my driveway. The way my driveway is now, you have to put your truck, my truck in 4-wheel drive to get up my driveway," Covetts told 14 News.

Kim Bard lives across the street from Covetts. She says damage to her rental house includes broken windows and a cracked foundation, stemming from vibrations during construction.

"I have five children that's mine, and then I have a 16-month-old grandbaby that I raise. I don't have a front yard, so they can't play out front. And out back, we've got people that speed up and down through our alley, trying to get around all the traffic. And so I'm worried about them playing out back too, getting in the road," Bard told 14 News.

INDOT has confirmed that the project will eventually extend through town, and is scheduled to be completed in September of this year.

During that time, residents say they will be concerned with the effect the construction could have on local police and firefighters.

"We've coordinated with them very much throughout this project, keeping them abreast of what's going on, so they can make accommodations to their routes," said Cher Elliott with INDOT.

Homeowners 14 News spoke to Thursday say that after the sidewalks are finished, the road itself will actually be repaved, and that they could be seeing the same issues all over again.
