EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
On Tuesday, a man was arrested after Evansville Police says he jumped off of a bicycle and ran into traffic.
Police believe 21-year-old Adonis Weathers smoked some sort of synthetic marijuana and say he was delusional and paranoid.
Although K2, spice and bath salts, are banned in the tri-state, Police say there are other legal products being used that can be even more dangerous.
14 News spoke to a mother who says her teenage son was friends with Weathers and believes they both smoked a legally sold herbal substance called 'Funky Green Stuff'.
Her son, James Gwyn, is also in jail after calling police himself more than a week ago, convinced someone was out to kill him.
"James is absolutely gorgeous, if you met him he would charm the socks off of you. You would think he is adorable, his eyes sparkle and he's got a great big grin, and the pictures that they have when they booked those two boys, it's like they aren't even in there," said Gwyn's mother Christina Greenwell.
Gwyn and Weathers were arrested on separate occasions, but Greenwell believes both had smoked a form of synthetic marijuana called Funky Green Stuff. Greenwell says she noticed an immediate change in her son's personality, he had become extra talkative and after smoking more of the herbal like substance becoming paranoid, and convinced someone was going to kill him the night of April 20. Gwyn even called police.
"He flung the door open and started screaming, 'Help..help..help'," said Greenwell.
Greenwell says police told her, her son would be taken to the hospital, but when she called the next morning, she was told he was in a jail cell facing battery charges.
"The drug continued to go through his system and even though he initially wanted help, it became a criminal issue because he started committing a battery act on a hospital employee that was trying to give him the help he had requested," said Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Cullum.
Like marijuana, K2 and Funky Green Stuff is a leafy substance that can be smoked, but police say the symptoms are completely different.
"Delusions, paranoia, their heart rate is really high, they feel very hot. I've been doing this for a long time, and I've never encountered anyone on marijuana with these type of symptoms," said Cullum. "The easiest way to describe it, is they just lose their mind."
Gwyn is still in jail awaiting his next court date.
Police say it is best to stay away from any of these synthetic products because the long term effects have not been studied.
