OHIO CO, KY (WFIE) -

The firemen of the Beaver Dam and Hartford departments saved a life this weekend, and the cause of fire in Ohio County has now been determined, and the man rescued from the burning home early Sunday morning is still in the hospital .

Three people were home when their house in the 700 block of South Main Street in Beaver Dam caught fire. A woman and a child had gotten out safely when firefighters arrived. Firefighters found the home fully engulfed, with flames shooting out from the windows.

"Located in just one room at the time," said Beaver Dam Fire Department Lt. Roy Daugherty.

But one more person was trapped inside on the second floor, 22-year-old Sam Fredel.

"Knowing that somebody might be inside. That really gets your adrenaline going at that point in time. We just deal with that danger all the time. You know that's something we just do. Know people run out of fires, we run in," said Daugherty.

Firefighters tell 14 News that they entered the burning home, going up some stairs and found the man unconscious in his room.

Fredel was on the floor beside his bed. The firemen carried Fredel out of the house, and was taken to the Ohio County Hospital, then airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital where he's listed in serious but stable condition.

"They have been friends of mine for a long time and I live right down the street. I'm very proud of the firefighters, whoever done that and rescued them. Grateful that the little boy's okay and hope and pray that something like this doesn't happen again in our neighborhood," said neighbor Darlene Cardwell.

Officials say the fire was accidental likely caused by a candle.

"It's not really livable at this time. This is all they had. A very big blow to the family," said Daughtery.

Firefighters say Fredel is alive because he was on the floor during the fire, where the smoke was not as thick.
