RADCLIFF, KY (WAVE) – A 13-month-old girl has died after Radcliff Police say she was accidentally shot to death by her 3-year-old brother.

"In playing with the pistol, the pistol discharged and struck the 13-month-old," Bryce Shumate with the Radcliff Police Department told WAVE 3 News.

It happened inside the family's home off of Keith Court in Radcliff around 3:00 pm Sunday.

"Three years old is a very innocent age which leads us to believe this is accidental," Shumate said.

Neighbors watched in disbelief, telling WAVE 3's Matt McCutcheon that the family of four is a good, loving family.

"I love living next door to them. The kids come over, I was watching the kids last night and they're a great family and it's a horrible thing that happened," neighbor and friend Shane Leiper told WAVE 3.

How the 3-year-old found the gun is still under investigation, but police believe the pistol wasn't locked inside the home.

Neighbors say the siblings loved one another and that it's a tragic accident.

"The 3 year old is probably one of the sweetest kids I've ever met. He's always talking and always has a smile on his face and always wants to hang out with the boys. The daughter was a beautiful little girl and very well behaved and always smiling and just a reflection of her parents," Leiper said.

The shooting remains under investigation.
